DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJECTIFS: Évaluer la sécurité et les bénéfices cardio-vasculaires de la thérapie avec les bêta-bloquants chez les patients atteints d'une maladie pulmonaire obstructive chronique (MPOC).

SOURCE DE L'INFORMATION: Les articles pertinents ont été identifiés lors d'une recherche sur MEDLINE. Les mots-clés utilisés pour la recherche étaient chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (maladie pulmonaire obstructive chronique) et adrenergic beta-agonist (agoniste des récepteurs beta-adrénergiques).

SYNTHESE DE L'INFORMATION: Les bêta-bloquants sont fréquemment évités chez les patients avec MPOC en raison de la crainte d'un bronchospasme et ce, malgré l'importance des bénéfices potentiels de cette thérapie sur la mortalité d'origine cardio-vasculaire. Une revue des études portant sur l'utilisation des bêta-bloquants chez les patients avec MPOC a donc été entreprise.

CONCLUSIONS: Cette revue de la littérature supporte la sécurité des bêta-bloquants et leur efficacité à réduire la mortalité cardio-vasculaire chez les patients atteints de MPOC. Les patients atteints d'une MPOC légère à modérée devraient recevoir un bêta-bloquant cardio-sélectif lorsque des indications claires sont identifiées.
