GERIATRICS

OBJECTIF: Évaluer l'incidence et les attitudes envers l'utilisation des produits naturels chez des personnes de plus de 65 ans demeurant aux États-Unis.

MÉTHODES: Une étude descriptive en utilisant les données recueillies de la "National Health Interview Survey 2002" a été effectuée. Les analyses statistiques ont été effectuées en utilisant le programme SUDAAN et en effectuant une linéarisation par série de Taylor.

RÉSULTATS: Une analyse de données pondérées a démontré que 12.9% des personnes âgées de plus de 65 ans aux États-Unis avaient utilisé des produits naturels dans les 12 mois précédent. L'utilisation était plus importante chez les personnes de 65 à 69 ans, les femmes, les hispaniques, et minorités non hispaniques ainsi que les personnes qui avaient un revenu important, un niveau d'éducation élevé, et une attitude positive envers leur état de santé. Parmi les utilisateurs de médicaments en vente libre et de médicaments prescrits, l'utilisation de produits naturels était de 13.9% et de 12.8%, respectivement. La glucosamine, l'echinacé, et les suppléments d'ail représentaient les produits les plus utilisés. L'effet positif des produits naturels et des traitements conventionnels étaient la raison la plus souvent mentionnée pour la prise de ces produits. Notons que 50% des personnes qui consommaient des produits naturels n'avaient pas discuté de leur utilisation avec leurs médecins. De nombreuses interactions théoriques produits naturels et pathologie ont été identifiées.

CONCLUSIONS: Au cours des 5 dernières années, l'utilisation des produits naturels chez les personnes de plus de 65 ans aux États-Unis a augmentée.
