L'épidémiologie changeante des candidases invasives ainsi que les craintes d'émergence de résistance nous obligent à identifier les patients à haut risque d'infections à Candida non-albicans en vue d'optimiser la thérapie empirique antifongique. Les éléments marquants de l'étude concernant les caractéristiques démographiques, les coûts, et le devenir des patients non neutropéniques avec une candidémie due à un candida non-albicans sont présentés. Considérant les options thérapeutiques disponibles, l'évaluation d'un tel risque est très important en vue d'initier une thérapie empirique chez des patients stables nonneutropéniques qui pourraient être candidats à une thérapie à un azole (tel le fluconazole). Les auteurs de cette étude mettent l'importance sur le besoin d'initier une thérapie antifongique rapidement chez les patients atteint d'une candidémie.
