Abstract

Le rapport de l'Institut de Médecine Américain intitulé réorganisation afin de faire face à une Amérique vieillissante: impact sur la main d'oeuvre des travailleurs de la santé a conclu que la main d'oeuvre dans ce secteur aura besoin d'un apport significatif de travailleurs pour s'occuper des 70 millions d'adultes de 65 ans et plus prévus en 2030. Le taux actuel de formation spécifique à la gériatrie des professionnels de diverses disciplines de la santé n'est pas suffisant pour maintenir dans le futur le présent ratio patient/professionnel spécialisé en gériatrie. La profession de pharmacien ne fait pas exception: actuellement, moins de 1% des pharmaciens sont certifiés ou ont reçu une formation spécialisée en gériatrie. Les écoles de pharmacie, les divers conseils, associations professionnelles et organismes d'accréditation devront collaborer afin de s'assurer que les pharmaciens posséderont les compétences de base pour prodiquer des soins pharmaceutiques à ces personnes âgées.
