The goal of the second edition of Patient Care in Community Practice is to provide a unique single-volume reference handbook to the background, use, and range of nonmedicinal products and appliances that may be used in the home setting. Using a chapter format, the book covers a wide range of topics, including stoma therapy, incontinence devices, graduated compression hosiery, oxygen therapy, various forms of nutrition and dietary products, home dialysis, wound management, oxygen and inhalation therapy, and trusses for abdominal hernias. This book contains a lot of useful information and illustrations to help the caregiver manage a variety of conditions at home. While diagrams and photographs are routinely used, the book could use more illustrations as well as summary tables for quick referencing.

The book was edited by an independent pharmaceutical and regulatory consultant in the UK, with individual chapters written by independent contributors who, for the most part, appear to be independent consultants or freelance writers rather than active health- or home-care practitioners. The chapters in the book do not appear to follow the same format, as writing styles and amount of information vary according to author. Moreover, several chapters were hard to follow, as background information was lacking and the format was disjointed. A main limitation of this book is that it is largely geared toward healthcare practitioners in the UK. For example, listings in the "Further reading" and "Useful addresses" sections of each chapter are British publications or organizations. Also, many of the products and sizes (e.g., metric vs. US units) are specific to the UK.

The book appears to be priced within an acceptable range and would be of use to pharmacists and nurses (and perhaps a family caregiver) practicing in the UK. Much of the information within would be useful to practitioners elsewhere, including the US; however, because not all of the information applies, it would be of limited value for the purchase price.
