Format and System Requirements: The 543-page hardcover book is also accompanied by a CD-ROM Value-Added eBook/PDA. The CD-ROM contains the entire volume of the book, which is licensed for only one computer or PDA. The instructions for installation (included in the book and on the CD-ROM) state that Adobe Reader 6.0 or Adobe PDA Reader software is required for the eBook, but the current edition for Adobe Reader is 7.0.
Purpose: The editors state that their intent is to provide information concerning carcinogenesis and the role of chemoprevention with medications, biologicals, or nutrients. Attention is called to the use of biomarkers, such as intraepithelial neoplasia, in the research of chemoprevention. Due to the amount of highly detailed information, those already practicing in the area of oncology would best use this book as a general reference.
Content: The book is divided into 2 parts for a total of 38 chapters. The first 5 chapters in Part I (Chemopreventive Agent Development Science) provide information concerning natural products, animal models for chemoprevention, use of transgenic mice, modeling human colorectal cancer in mice, and pathology of incipient neoplasia. The next 9 chapters discuss quantitative nuclear grade, genome database, functional genomics in breast cancer chemoprevention, proteomics, bioinformatics, models of absolute risk, genetic polymorphisms, design issues, and recruitment strategies for cancer prevention trials. Part II reviews cancer chemoprevention at major cancer target sites, which are prostate, breast, colorectal, lung, bladder, esophagus, head and neck, skin, cervix, endometrium, ovary, pancreas, liver, and multiple myeloma. Carcinogenesis and current or future chemoprevention strategies for specific tumors are evaluated in detail in the 24 chapters of Part II.
