Format: Hematology/Oncology I and IIThe Pharmacotherapy Self-Assessment Program (PSAP-V), 5th edition, is the tenth volume of the 11 book series. It is also available online for an additional cost. The subscriber will receive an email notification concerning the online course within 2 days of purchase. The program is reasonably priced for members and nonmembers.
Audience: The text is designed as a resource for pharmacists involved in managing hematology or oncology patients. Additionally, the text can be used to obtain continuing education credit or as a study guide to prepare or recertify for the Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS) certificate.
Purpose: The editors' goal is to provide a text that can be used as a self-assessment tool for pharmacists in the specialized area of hematology and oncology.
Content: The text is organized into 3 modules: hematology, oncology I, and oncology II. Hematology chapters include adult acute leukemias, hemophilias and thrombophilias, and multiple myeloma. The oncology I module covers melanoma and ovarian, lung, and prostate cancers. The final module, oncology II, discusses infections in and supportive care for patients with cancer. The purpose of the modules is to allow the reader to receive continuing education or recertification credit in "smaller, bitesized chunks." Each chapter begins with learning objectives and is followed by a discussion of the hematologic or oncologic topic. Generally, the authors cover the areas of epidemiology, etiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, staging, and treatment. The information is presented in a concise format with use of current clinical practice guidelines. At the conclusion of each chapter, an annotated bibliography is listed along with self-assessment questions.
Usability: References are listed either throughout the chapters as footnotes of pertinent clinical trials or in an annotated bibliography with emphasis on current clinical practice guidelines. The reader has the potential of obtaining a total of 16.5 contact hours of continuing education credits through the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education.
Highlights: The peer-reviewed book offers insight into current clinical practice guidelines for specific hematologic or oncologic diseases. Pertinent information is given to enhance the pharmacist's role in managing the diseases.
Limitations: The major limitation is that the book is not sufficiently comprehensive in discussing all of the common tumors (eg, breast cancer, lymphomas, colon cancer, adult chronic leukemias, were not included in the text). The treatment of hematology and oncology is dynamic; therefore, any textbook can quickly become outdated due to new research outcomes.
Comparison with Previous Edition or Volume: The fifth edition is comparable in its content and quality to previous editions. Noted changes are smaller modules that can be completed independently for credit, footnote references, and an abbreviated annotated bibliography.
Comparison with Other Related Books or Products: The book is a valuable resource; however, its discussion of numerous hematologic diseases and tumors is incomplete. Other hematology and oncology textbooks that would be more comprehensive are Clinical Oncology1 and Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology.2
Reviewer's Summary: Hematology/Oncology I and IIPSAP-V, Book 10 provides an overview of many hematologic and oncologic disease topics, although its scope can not be considered comprehensive. The program also provides an excellent opportunity for pharmacists to complete continuing education credits or to prepare for the BCPS.
