Format: This softcover book contains a table of contents, preface, preface for the first edition, a chapter that addresses general principles of psychopharmacotherapy, 8 chapters on related drug therapies, a list of references, and an index. A convenient index that directs the reader to information on medications used for the various DSM-IV diagnoses is found on the inside of the front and back covers.
Audience: Clinicians who use psychoactive drugs in the treatment of children and adolescents comprise the target audience. Other healthcare professionals who encounter this patient population may also have an interest in this publication.
Purpose: This text is intended to provide the healthcare professional with information regarding clinical psychopharmacology as it relates to children and adolescents.
Content: Most of the book is devoted to the presentation of specific psychopharmacologic agents. A brief introduction is followed by chapters that focus on various drug classes. The pharmacokinetics, indications, contraindications, adverse effects, and interactions of the medications are presented, as are reports of interest.
Usability: Content is supported by an extensive list of references, both dated and current. Based on the quantity and quality of information presented, the book appears to be reasonably priced.
Highlights: This text provides a thorough review of the psychopharmacologic agents used in the treatment of associated disorders in pediatric patients. It is well written and provides the reader with insights on supportive clinical trials.
Limitations: Given the intent of the publication and its desired audience, there are no significant identifiable limitations to the use of this text.
Comparison with Previous Editions or Versions: The 4th edition has been updated to address recent concerns regarding the use of psychopharmacotherapy in pediatric patients. It not only presents new drug formulations but also updates the reader on new indications for previously approved medications.
Comparison with Other Related Books or Products: Whereas other resources present some of the same information contained in this text, this publication presents a thorough, easily read, focused, and referenced review of psychopharmacotherapy for the pediatric patient.
