OBJETIVO: Evaluar trastuzumab en el tratamiento de cáncer del pulmón de célula no pequeña.

FUENTES DE DATOS: La literatura clínica fue accesada a través de MEDLINE, EMBASE, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts, Proceedings of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, y Genetech. Los términos de la búsqueda incluyeron trastuzumab, cáncer del pulmón, herceptin, y cáncer del pulmón de célula no pequeña.

SÍNTESIS DE DATOS: La investigación y la experiencia clínica han demostrado que trastuzumab inhibe la proliferación de células tumorales que sobre expresan Her-2/neu. Además, este anticuerpo monoclonal aumenta la citotoxicidad de los fármacos e inhibe la angiogenesis de los tumores. Debido a que el cáncer del pulmón de célula no pequeña expresa la proteína Her-2/neu, el trastuzumab podría ser valioso para el tratamiento de los pacientes con esta condición. En este artículo, se revisa y evalúa la literatura relacionada al uso de trastuzumab para el manejo de cáncer del pulmón de célula no pequeña.

CONCLUSIONES: Los datos de los estudios clínicos revelan que trastuzumab es potencialmente sinergístico con la quimioterapia estándar de paclitaxel y carboplatino. Se necesita realizar estudios fase III que comparen dicha combinación con un grupo control activo. Al presente, la evidencia apoya el uso trastuzumab en el tratamiento para cáncer de célula del pulmón de célula no pequeña sólo en escenarios de investigación.
