OBJETIVO: Proveer un repaso sobre el uso e impacto de la Información Escrita de Medicamentos (IEM) en el consumidor y revisar la literatura sobre los factores que influyen en el uso de la IEM al consumidor.
EXTRACCIÓN DE DATOS: Documentos relevantes publicados en inglés desde finales de los años 1970 fue identificados usando investigaciones de base de datos en la red cibernética, textos, y referencias citadas en artículos publicados.
SELECCIÓN DE DATOS: Se incluyeron hallazgos que reportan el origen, uso, e impacto de IEM. Además debido a la literatura limitada fueron incluidos publicaciones que reportan hallazgos con los factores que influyen el uso de IEM, como también información de enfermedades.
EXTRACCIÓN DE DATOS: Debido a la falta de consistencia en el diseño entre publicaciones y el pequeño volumen de trabajo, se consideró más apropiado una evaluación subjetiva más que una revisión objetiva basada en criterios.
SÍNTESIS DE DATOS: Hasta ahora, las investigaciones de IEM han enfocado el uso y su impacto. La IEM tiene un potencial para crecimiento en el conocimiento, cumplimiento, y satisfacción de los pacientes. Sin embargo, existe un potencial de ansiedad o para descontinuar el tratamiento debido al miedo a los posibles efectos secundarios. Los múltiples factores podrían potencialmente influir el uso de IEM en el consumidor. Estos factores incluyen aquellos asociados con la información escrita en el documento (presentación, lectura amena), paciente (habilidad para leer, entender, y actuar con temas de salud), rol del custodio, factores demográficos, estilo de creencia religiosa, estilo psicológico, ambiente, y otros.
CONCLUSIONES: La información escrita de medicamentos tiene un potencial para impactar positiva o negativamente en el consumidor. A pesar de no ser investigado ampliamente, un número de factores podrían potencialmente influir el uso de IEM por el consumidor. Los hallazgos de esta revisión podrían formar parte para la base en la gran necesidad de investigaciones posteriores.
