OBJETIVO: Repasar la posible asociación entre la estatinas y neuropatía periferal.

FUENTES DE INFORMACIÓN: Se identificó literatura listada en la base de datos de MEDLINE (1984–septiembre 2002) y de IPA (1970–junio 2002). Se incluyeron como términos utilizados para la búsqueda estatinas, neuropatía, e inhibidores de reductasa de HMG-CoA.

SÍNTESIS: Los estudios epidemiológicos y los reportes de casos sugieren un aumento en el riesgo de neuropatía periferal al utilizar las estatinas. La mayoría de los pacientes que desarrollaron neuropatía periferal estaban recibiendo terapia a largo plazo, aunque el tiempo de inicio era bien variable. La mayoría de los casos fueron por lo menos parcialmente reversibles al descontinuar el medicamento. No se han podido identificar factores de riesgo o mecanismos.

CONCLUSIONES: Datos observacionales parecen sugerir una asociación entre el uso crónico de estatinas y un aumento en el riesgo de neuropatía periferal. Sin embargo, el riesgo parece ser pequeño al compararse con los significativos beneficios cardioprotectores.
