OBJETIVO: Describir la utilidad de algunas referencias terciarias más comunes usadas por los profesionales de cuidado de la salud para contestar peticiones acerca de productos naturales y suplementos dietéticos.

METODOLOGÍA: Se evaluaron todos los pedidos de información sobre productos naturales y suplementos dietéticos recibidas por el Servico de Información de Medicamentos entre abril y septiembre 2000. Cada pregunta fue evaluada independientemente por 4 clínicos usando una escala de 4 puntos; por otra parte 14 referencias fueron investigadas por su apropiada contestación. El por ciento de respuesta para los 4 posibles marcadores para cada referencia en el total y por categoría de pregunta fue reportada para determinar la referencia más útil para contestar el amplio gama de preguntas.

RESULTADOS: Cincuenta preguntas relacionadas a productos naturales y suplementos dietéticos fueron evaluadas. Se determinó que el banco de datos electrónicos (Natural Medicine Comprehensive Database y Micromedex) y la red Cibernética (The Natural Pharmacist) eran las referencias más útiles para proveer información de productos naturales y suplementos dietéticos. El libro de referencia más útil fue The Natural Therapeutic Pocket Guide.

CONCLUSIONES: Estos resultados podrían ayudar a demostrar la documentación de información útil de productos naturales y suplementos dietéticos. Además estos datos ayudan a los profesionales de cuidado de salud a justificar fondos para nuevos recursos en lo que se construye una biblioteca con información para el manejo de peticiones sobre estos productos.
