OBJETIVO: Repasar la farmacología, farmacocinética, eficacia clínica, y perfil de seguridad de aripiprazole en el tratamiento de esquizofrenia.

FUENTES DE INFORMACILN: Se seleccionó información de Pub Med (enero 1995–agosto 2002). Además se utilizaron extractos, carteles científicas, y presentaciones.

SINTESIS: En dosis de 10 a 30 mg/d sin titular, aripiprazole es un agonista parcial de dopamine (DA) y un antagonista del receptor de serotonin-2A (5-HT2A). Estudios clínicos a corto plazo han demostrado que aripiprazole es efectivo en exacerbaciones agudas, y estudios a largo plazo han logrado mantener el paciente en remisión. La mayoría de los efectos adversos son leves. La incidencia de síntomas extrapiramidales es baja, siendo acatisia el síntoma más común.

CONCLUSIONES: Aripiprazole actualmente demuestra una efectividad y seguridad comparable en el tratamiento de esquizofrenia.
