OBJETIVO: Revisar la literatura relacionada al tratamiento de dependencia de alcohol con acamprosate, un compuesto sintético estructuralmente similar al amino ácido natural homotaurina.

FUENTES DE INFORMACIÓN: Se identificó literatura primaria y artículos de revisión con una búsqueda de MEDLINE (1966–2002). Extractos presentados en reuniones recientes también fueron revisados.

SÌNTESIS: Acamprosate está en el mercado de 24 países. Aunque el mecanismo preciso de acamprosate en el tratamiento de dependencia de alcohol no está claro, puede ser que restaure el balance entre la neurotransmisión inhibitoria y excitatoria a nivel del sistema nervioso central. Los estudios europeos han demostrado aumentos consistentes en la tasa de abstinencia comparado a placebo cuando el uso de acamprosate se pareó con terapias psicosociales y de comportamiento apropiadas. También se ha reportado disminución en los costos de salud directos e indirectos.

CONCLUSIONES: Acamprosate es un medicamento prometedor para el tratamiento de dependencia de alcohol en los Estados Unidos.
