OBJETIVO: Evaluar la relación existente entre la utilización de isotretinoina y la patología psiquiátrica en adolescentes y adultos jóvenes.

FUENTE DE DATOS: Las fuentes primarias proceden del MEDLINE (1996–diciembre 2002). Las palabras claves para la búsqueda fueron isotretinoina, depresión, psicosis, suicidio, y adolescentes.

RESUMEN DE LOS DATOS: La alerta sobre el peligro de depresión fue añadida en el etiquetado de la isotretinoina en 1998 después de una serie de casos identificados en la literatura y enviados a la MedWatch system. Se realizó una evaluación de los ensayos sobre la isotretinoina y morbilidad psiquiátrica.

CONCLUSIONES: A pesar de que puede existir una relación causal entre la isotretinoina y la aparición de patología psiquiátrica en adolescentes y jóvenes adultos, esto no ha sido demostrado en la literatura médica. Sin embargo, hasta que exista una evidencia sólida que establezca la presencia o ausencia de causalidad, los prescriptores deben actuar con precaución cuando traten adolescentes y jóvenes adultos con isotretinoina y monitorizar a los pacientes para el desarrollo de alteraciones psiquiátricas.
