DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJETIVO: Evaluar la eficacia y la seguridad de la olanzapina en el tratamiento de los transtornos psicoticos y comportamentales de la enfermedad de Alzheimer.

FUENTES DE INFORMACIÓN: Se han realizado bùsquedas en MEDLINE (desde 1996 hasta enero 2003) y en Science Citation Index. Los términos buscados ha sido olanzapina, Alzheimer(s), y demencia.

SÍNTESIS: Se han revisado 4 estudios con olanzapina de los cuales se han realizado analisis post-hoc.

CONCLUSIONES: La olanzapina parece eficaz en el tratamiento de los transtornos psicoticos y de comportamineto asociados a la enfermedad de Alzheimer. Sin embargo, no se ha determinado aún la dosis adecuada. El beneficio de la terapia con olanzapina debería evaluarse considerando los posibles efectos adversos y los tratamientos alternativos.
