Los viajes a destinos remotos han aumentado drásticamente en los últimos años. En el año 1991 en el Kaiser Permanente en la Región de Colorado, se estableció la Clinical Pharmacy International Travel Clinic (CPITC) para proporcionar consejos al viajero, con el objetivo de disminuir el riesgo de enfermedades relacionadas con los viajes. La CPITC es diferente de otras unidades clínicas de medicina del viajero porque es un servicio de telefarmacia. El equipo de la CPITC incluye un médico y un farmacéutico clínico, ambos especialistas en enfermedades infecciosas, 4 farmacéuticos clínicos, y un auxiliar de farmacia. El farmacéutico clínico de la CPITC ofrece consultas telefónicas. Se recoge información sobre el paciente y sobre el viaje para conocer el riesgo del viajero. Las recomendaciones se refieren a enfermedades relacionadas con los alimentos y el agua, enfermedades relacionadas con picaduras de insectos, enfermedades de transmisión sexual, y enfermedades relacionadas con las mordeduras de animales. Además, se proporciona información detallada sobre las vacunas que puedan ser necesarias para proteger a los viajeros contra varias enfermedades. La consulta se documenta electrónicamente. Una copia de la consulta junto con un folleto se envía por correo al domicilio del paciente. El éxito de la CPITC se ha demostrado de diversas maneras. La CPITC ofrece servicio a los miembros del Kaiser Permanente en la Región de Colorado. El servicio se ha expandido y actualmente también ofrece elservicio de consulta al viajero a los miembros del Kaiser Permanente en la Región del Northwest y Ohio. La satisfacción del paciente es elevada, y se han logrado ahorros significativos como resultado de evitar el uso de vacunas y de medicación innecesarias. El CPITC permite optimizar los recursos y proporciona un centro donde profesionales entrenados en medicina del viajero ofrecen información a los usuarios, lo que aumenta la eficiencia y disminuye el coste.
