OBJETIVO: Evaluar el papel que juega el trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole como alternativa a vancomicina en el tratamiento de infecciones severas causadas por Staphylococcus aureus.
FUENTES DE DATOS: Se utilizó literatura clínica accesada utilizando las bases de datos de MEDLINE y EMBASE. Las palabras claves de la búsqueda incluyeron trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole y Staphylococcus aureus.
SÍNTESIS DE DATOS: Se realizó una evaluación de los casos reportados, series de casos, y estudios clínicos que enfocan en el uso de trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole en el tratamiento de infecciones severas causadas por S. aureus.
CONCLUSIONES: Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole puede ser una alternativa útil al uso de vancomicina en el tratamiento de infecciones severas causadas por S. aureus. Se deben conducir estudios randomizados que comparen este agente con vancomicina y linezolid.
