DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJETIVO: Repasar la literatura en cuanto al manejo de la bacteriuria asintomática (BAS) en pacientes con diabetes mellitus.

FUENTES DE INFORMACIÓN: Se realizo una búsqueda en MEDLINE (1967 a junio 2003) y un repaso bibliográfico de la literatura en idioma inglés usando los términos como diabetes mellitus, bacteriuria, e infección del tracto urinario.

SÍNTESIS DE INFORMACIÓN: BAS ocurre más común en mujeres diabéticas y está asociado con un riesgo creciente en infecciones sintomáticas de las vías urinarias entre pacientes con diabetes tipo 2. Infecciones del tracto urinario sintomático tienden a seguir un curso más complicado en los diabéticos. A pesar de estas observaciones independientes, la terapia antimicrobiana no ha demostrado ser eficaz en reducir la infección urinaria sintomática, el pielonefritis, o la hospitalización debido a infecciones de las vías urinarias.

CONCLUSIONES: La evidencia disponible no apoya el tratamiento antimicrobiano del BAS entre pacientes con diabetes mellitus.
