DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJETIVO: Evaluar el uso y beneficio de los antivirales orales en el tratamiento episódico de herpes labialis recurrente.

FUENTES DE DATOS: Se realizó una búsqueda literaria utilizando la base de datos de MEDLINE para el período comprendido entre 1966 hasta agosto de 2003. Se utilizaron las siguientes palabras claves: acyclovir, famciclovir, valacyclovir, cold sores, herpes labialis, y HSV-1.

SÍNTESIS DE DATOS: Se revisaron 5 estudios controlados con placebo y 2 estudios comparativos que evaluaron los antivirales orales utilizados en el tratamiento de herpes labialis. Ninguno de los estudios comparó directamente los distintos antivirales. Los estudios que evaluaron la eficacia de los antivirales en la supresión crónica de HSV-1 no fueron incluídos.

CONCLUSIONES: El tratamiento con antivirales orales disminuye la duración de las lesiones y el dolor alrededor de un día; sin embargo, estos no abortan el desarrollo de lesiones. Las implicaciones clínicas de estos resultados aparentan ser relativamente módicas.
