DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJETIVO: Revisar la literatura que evalúa el uso de los inhibidores selectivos de la recaptació n de serotonina (SSRIs, por sus siglas en inglés) para el tratamiento de calentones (hot flashes).

FUENTES DE INFORMACIÓN: La literatura biomédica fue accesada a través de los sistemas de MEDLINE (1966–junio de 2003), MD Consult, y las referencias de los artículos revisados. Los términos que se utilizaron para la búsqueda fueron calentones, síntomas vasomotores, antidepresivos, y SSRIs.

SÍNTESIS: La evidencia reciente no recomienda el uso de la terapia hormonal tradicional para algunas mujeres. Los tratamientos no hormonales son posibles opciones; sin embargo, existe evidencia conflictiva acerca de su eficacia.

CONCLUSIONES: Aunque se necesitan má s estudios en esta á rea, los datos preliminares sugieren que los SSRIs son generalmente modestamente exitosos en reducir la frecuencia y la severidad de los calentones.
