Una publicación reciente del informe del Instituto de Medicina sobre El Futuro del Cuidado de Emergencia Médica ha identificado las limitaciones principales del cuidado proporcionado por las salas de emergencia. El creciente desarrollo de los servicios farmacéuticos en las salas de emergencia y el aumento en el envolvimiento del farmacéutico en ésta área pueden contribuir a un mejoramiento en las limitaciones identificadas en el informe. Los programas de entrenamiento en farmacia tienen que tomar la iniciativa de incorporar en sus currículos cuidado de emergencia para cubrir el aumento predecible en la demanda de farmacéuticos en la sala de emergencia. Las asociaciones de farmacia, administradores y los médicos de sala de emergencia deben dirigir sus investigaciones en el impacto del farmacéutico en las salas de emergencia.
