DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJETIVO: Evaluar el uso de lenalidomida en el manejo de mieloma múltiple y síndrome mielodisplásico.

FUENTES DE DATOS: Se realizó una revisión de la literatura a través de MEDLINE (1966-agosto de 2005), en el Índice de Citación Científica (1980-agosto de 2005), y en las Actas de la Sociedad Americana de Hematología (2000-2004).

SÍNTESIS DE DATOS: Se han sintetizado nuevos análogos de talidomida que son más potentes y menos tóxicos. La lenalidomida, CC-5103, se encuentra en estudios de la Fase III para el manejo de mieloma múltiple y síndrome mielodisplásico. Estudios en Fase II demostraron la eficacia de lenalidomida en pacientes refractarios a talidomida. Aún está por probarse el potencial total de este fármaco, pero los datos preliminares lucen prometedores.

CONCLUSIONES: Lenalidomida es un inmunomodulador potente que ofrece varios mecanismos de acción y utilidad terapéutica en el manejo de mieloma múltiple, síndrome mielodisplásico, y otras malignidades.
