DRUG INFORMATION ROUNDS

OBJETIVO: Revisar el uso de los antioxidantes y otros suplementos para la prevención de la enfermedad de Parkinson.

FUENTES DE INFORMACIÓN: Se accesó la literatura biomédica a través del motor de búsqueda de información médica por MEDLINE para las fechas de enero del 1996 hasta junio del 2005. Los términos utilizados para la búsqueda incluyeron Enfermedad de Parkinson, coenzima Q10, antioxidantes, suplementos, y glutation. Se evaluaron las referencias citadas en los artÍculos para incluirse en esta revisión.

SÍNTESIS: Se han estudiado 3 antioxidantes o suplementos para la prevención y tratamiento de la enfermedad de Parkinson: tocoferol, coenzyma Q10, y glutation. Estos agentes se han estudiado por su potencial de alterar el curso de 2 teorías comunes de la patogénesis en enfermedad de Parkinson: la generación de radicales libres y la deficiencia en el complejo-1 mitocondrial. La literatura revela 3 estudios clínicos de tocoferol, 5 de coenzima Q10, y 1 de glutation. La mayoría de los estudios eran pequeños, de corta duración y casi todos produjeron resultados equívocos.

CONCLUSIONES: Al presente, los antioxidantes parecen tener un rol limitado en la prevención o tratamiento de la enfermedad de Parkinson. De los estudiados, la coenzima Q10 parece proveer algún beneficio en los escasos estudios publicados. Se necesitan màs estudios para determinar si la coenzima Q10 tiene un rol significativo como terapia primaria o adjunta en la enfermedad de Parkinson.
