De todos los efectos metabólicos de algunos de los antipsychotics atípicos de segunda generación, es su potencial para inducir el descontrol de glucosa que ha inducido una tormenta de controversia durante los últimos años. Los numerosos estudios epidemiológicos publicados son difíciles de interpretar debido al alto índice de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2 en esta población, los problemas inherentes asociados con el análisis de datos de observación, y duración corta de los estudios disponibles.
