Vacuna HPV: Inmersos en la Controversia

Desde la aprobación por la FDA de Gardasil (Merck & Co., Inc.) el 8 de junio de 2006 ha habido una importante cobertura mediática de la vacuna cuatrivalente del papilomavirus humano (HPV). Las quejas más sonoras mantienen que su uso va a promover la promiscuidad entre los jóvenes y rechazan la propuesta de obligatoriedad para el ingreso escolar. Algunos también cuestionan la evidencia disponible sobre la seguridad de la vacuna. Tanto los proveedores como los pacientes han expresado su preocupación en torno a las barreras financieras al acceso a la vacuna. Otros, por el contrario, sostienen que grupos de población adicionales, que no han sido incluidos en las actuales recomendaciones, podrían beneficiarse de esta vacuna. Es esencial clarificar estas cuestiones para avanzar en el uso óptimo de esta importante nueva vacuna.
