El manejo de pacientes con síndromes de gasto cardíaco bajo es difícil. Las terapias actuales (por ejemplo, los agentes inotrópicos) están asociadas con efectos adversos y no han demostrado que afecten el resultado clínico tal como la disminución de la mortalidad o la prolongación de la hospitalización. Los pacientes que no tienen la capacidad de recobrarse de estados de gasto cardíaco bajo poseen daño de órganos vitales, presentan hospitalizaciones prolongadas, incremento de los costos de hospitalización, y readmisiones al hospital. Se ha sugerido que el nesiritide puede ser un medicamento alternativo o adyuvante para tratar los pacientes con cirugía cardíaca. Estudios recientes han provisto de información sobre los efectos de alguno de estos agentes sobre los resultados clínicos incluyendo falla respiratoria, duración hospitalaria, y mortalidad.
