La cambiante epidemiología de la candidiasis invasora, junto con la preocupación por aumentos en la resistencia a medicamentos, han requerido que pacientes a alto riesgo a desarrollar Cándida no-albicans sean identificados para así optimizar la selección del tratamiento antifúngico. Se discuten los resultados principales de un estudio con respecto a las características demográficas, los costos, y resultados de pacientes no-neutropénicos con candidemia debido a Cándida no-albicans. Dadas las opciones disponibles para tratamiento, tal valoración de riesgo es la más relevante al inicio de la terapia empírica en pacientes estables sin neutropenia que podrían ser candidatos a la terapia inicial con un agente azólico (tal como fluconazol). Los autores del estudio apoyan el requerimiento de terapia antifúngica oportuna para los pacientes con candidemia.
