COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE

Identificación Comunitaria de Interacciones a Medicamentos entre Productos Naturales

TRASFONDO: La mayoría de los canadienses usan productos naturales para la salud (PNS) y la mayoría de éstos productos se compran en las farmacias. Frequentemente los farmacéuticos de comunidad reciben preguntas relacionadas al uso de éstos productos. Los farmacéuticos están en una posición ideal para obtener información sobre el uso de éstos productos y para vigilar por la occurrencia de interacciones entre medicamentos.

MÉTODOS: Las preguntas para las entrevistas se obtuvieron de una revisión de la literatura de entrevistas previas. Los datos se recolectaron de Salud Canadá y en consulta con médicos, farmacéuticos, administradores, e investigadores. Una muestra de 321 farmacias de comunidad en Alberta y en British Columbia fueron invitadas a participar.

RESULTADOS: Se obtuvo respuesta de 132 farmacéuticos resultando en una tasa de participación de 41% (132/321). Un total de 19% de la muestra ya había reportado una reacción adversa a Salud Canadá. Cuando se preguntó específicamente sobre los PNS-interacciones entre medicamentos - reacciones adversas, un 47% de los farmacéuticos reportaron que habían visto una interacción potencial, sin embargo, solo dos de éstos fueron reportadas a Salud Canadá. Los farmacéuticos estaban más comunmente familiarizados con la interacción entre la sertralina y el St. John's wort (76% de los participantes). Los farmacéuticos estaban menos familiarizados con las interacciones entre PNS y los antiretrovirales.

CONCLUSIONES: Esta encuesta provee evidencia que sugiere que los farmacéuticos pueden encontrar interacciones reportables entre PNS y medicamentos. Sin embargo, raras veces éstas son reportadas por parte de los farmacéuticos. La escaséz de datos sobre posibles reacciones adversas a los PNS hace difícil el proveer estrategias para los profesionales de la salud y los pacientes para que éstos manejen reacciones adversas a medicamentos e interacciones entre medicamentos. Se requieren cambios en el sistema actual de monitoreo de reacciones adversas a PNS y educación para los profesionales de la salud sobre las interacciones con los PNS.
