Probióticos para la Diarrea Asociada a Clostridium difficile: Su uso en Perspectiva

La diarrea asociada a Clostridium difficile es una infección seria y costosa con una alta morbilidad y mortalidad, aún en individuos saludables. La recurrencia de la infección es común luego del tratamiento estándar con antibióticos, con un 3-5% de los pacientes que no pueden descontinuar el tratamiento con vancomicina debido a la recurrencia continua de episodios de diarrea asociada a C. difficile. Estos pacientes pudieran tener una inmunodeficiencia específica que no les permite desarrollar una respuesta inmune contra C. difficile. En estos individuos, las terapias con agentes antimicrobiales no logran erradicar el microorganismo ya que no existen antibióticos capaces de eliminar las esporas de C. difficile. Aún cuando los agentes probióticos son considerados "medicina alternativa," éstos han provisto un medio seguro y efectivo para reestablecer la flora gastrointestinal y aliviar la diarrea asociada a C. difficile, particularmente en individuos que sufren múltiples episodios recurrentes.
